William Carey University
CAMPUSES: Carey is located on three campuses. The main campus in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is set on 120 acres. Carey on the Coast is located in Gulfport with a scenic ocean view. The School of Nursing has a site on the campus of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
HISTORY: Founded in 1906 and operating for decades as Mississippi Woman’s College, William Carey College was renamed in honor of the founder of modern missions in 1954 when the school became coeducational. In 2006, the College’s board of trustees renamed the institution William Carey University.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS/DEGREES: Carey offers baccalaureate degrees in the areas of arts, humanities, and sciences; education and psychology; business; religion; music; and nursing. The M.B.A., M.Ed., M.S. in psychology, and M.S.N. degrees and a specialist degree in elementary education are also offered. Three trimesters of eleven weeks each comprise the academic year. Two summer sessions are also offered.
ACCREDITATION: William Carey University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; (telephone number 404-679-4500), to award bachelor and master degrees.
The Winters School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The music therapy program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association.
The Fail School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, (800-669-1656 ext. 153); by the board of trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi, and approved in New Orleans by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
FACULTY: Interest in the individual student characterizes the classroom experience. Taught by outstanding faculty who have gained national reputations, students are challenged by professors dedicated to teaching. The faculty has produced graduates who have compiled outstanding records of acceptance to medical, dental, law, seminaries, and a wide variety of graduate schools.
ATHLETICS: Athletic teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, and men’s golf. The Crusaders have an impressive history of athletic excellence.
ORGANIZATIONS/ACTIVITIES: Carey offers many activities for the nearly 2600 students enrolled. Active campus organizations include the Student Government Association, Baptist Student Union, African-American Cultural Society, Serampore Players, social clubs, and many more. Carey also has a strong intramural program offering students the opportunity to play basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, and volleyball in a friendly setting.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Annually, over 90% Carey students receive some form of financial assistance.
